£2.7M Spent On Morel Farm Conversion

Morel Farm Credit: National Trust for Jersey

The National Trust for Jersey has spent almost £2.7 million turning Morel Farm into holiday lets.

Islanders have had a first look inside the newly-refurbished farm complex ahead of it welcoming its first visitors in June.

The 17th century site in rural St Lawrence has been turned into self-catering accommodation.

The National Trust for Jersey was given £2.16 million from a Jersey government fund to help the island's economy recover following the Covid-19 pandemic.

The charity has put another £500,000 into the project.

Planning consent for the work was granted in December 2021.

Trust CEO Charles Alluto says they wanted to make Morel farm as pleasant as possible.

Morel farm has been needing investment for over 20 years, and so it was an amazing opportunity that (the) Fiscal Stimulus (Fund) came around, and we were able to renovate this farm complex, and do it in such a way that it benefits our island's economy - which was what Fiscal Stimulus aimed to do in terms of the tourism sector."

The farm has a four-bedroom flat and two one-bedroom flats available to hire.

Neighbours have had their first look at what has been done during an open day last weekend.

"Hopefully they have seen that we have done the works very carefully.  We have renovated and looked after the significance of the buildings.  I think everyone was impressed with the quality of the furnishing and the fittings and the overall atmosphere we have created within the farm complex."

The National Trust has used photographs and portraits of the Morel family and farming heritage within the homes.

"We intend to safeguard the rural environment, because that is what will attract visitors to come to the site in the first place."
