St Martin Ends Battle Of Flowers Team

The St Martin Battle of Flowers Association has decided to dissolve the team after 20 years of competing.

It says it is a decision it has been sitting on for a while after facing numerous struggles with building locations, storms destroying marquees, and its volunteers moving on.

Beth Gicquel says it's disappointing, but there has been an incredible generation of volunteers.

"We came to the sad but inevitable decision that it was time to wrap the current organisation.

"There's also a lot of amazing memories that we've made.

"We have some fantastic photos of different floats and everybody's involvement over the years, from the initial building all the way through to being in the parade arena."

It follows reports that the 2023 Christmas Battle Parade will be cancelled for a second year in a row due to limited resources.

Battle of Flowers Association Chairman Russell Labey says the team is disappointed, and the exhibitors are particularly crestfallen.

Our participation began with one float being invited to join the St Helier Fête dé Noué festivities and developed, over the years, into a full parade, which the The Battle of Flowers Association is now relied upon to organise and subside. A considerable call on our limited resources.

We do enjoy the offer of support from Economic Development to cover the exhibitor’s expenses and we’re grateful for that.

We think the event has value, if others agree, we can partner up and parade again in Christmas 2024.

To wave off the St Martin team effort, the association is holding a 'Final Hurrah' at the Royal Yacht.

The black-tie event is £10 and open to everyone who has joined or supported the team throughout its history.

The event will be held on 27 April 2024, and tickets can be bought by emailing [email protected].
