Springfield Stadium Work Deadline Extended

The deadline to complete work on the Springfield Stadium supporter areas has been pushed back to Saturday 23 April.

The government says Covid-19 and supply and delivery issues have caused 'unavoidable delays'.

The original deadline was the end of March.

The English FA Ground Grading sub-committee granted the deadline extension. The ground will then be inspected by the league.

"I am delighted and grateful to the English FA Ground Grading Sub-Committee for granting the new deadline for achieving a ground standard of Grade F.

The Government of Jersey has commissioned additional work to achieve a higher grading, up to and including Step Three of the English league football, which will ensure Springfield Stadium can continue to serve the whole of the Football community well into the future.  The additional work, including routine maintenance, will continue until late June.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Government Project Team and the contractors who have worked hard to ensure this project could happen; the new fencing is now on island and installation well underway." - Deputy Hugh Raymond, Assistant Minister with responsibility for sport.

Deputy Raymond previously told Channel 103 that mistakes were made with how the closure of the stadium was dealt with.

Jersey FA CEO David Kennedy said the closure took him by surprise, as he had previously been told that sports programmes could continue while the work was carried out.

Work started in mid-February.

The Springfield pitch can be used again from Friday 1 April, but supporter standing won't be allowed until after Saturday 23 April.

Jersey Bulls had to play a 'home' fixture at the home of League One side Wycombe Wanderers this past weekend.

Gary Freeman's men suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time ever, with Banstead Athletic scoring a last-gasp winner.

The Bulls will play  Colliers Wood United at Three Bridge's ground on Saturday 26 March, with the Balham game on Wednesday 30 March taking place at the home of Ascot United.
