Plans Submitted For Plat Douet Homes And 'Dementia Village'

Plans have been submitted to create 66 new homes and a 'dementia care village' at Plat Douet.

If approved, the development would replace Arzl House, Canning Court, Samuel Le Riche House and a disused Waitrose warehouse.

The footprint of the new development

The plans - which have been drawn up by Axis Mason for property developer Dandara - include 66 apartments split across two blocks, making up 18 one-bedroom and 48 two-bedroom homes.

The proposed 'dementia care village' includes three blocks with 10 independent living units, as well as a 57-bedroom residential home run by the LV Care Group.

It would also include a shop, hairdresser, pub, café and eight units of staff accommodation.

A new residential home and 30 independent living units for islanders with dementia are included in the plans

Nick Bettany, LV's CEO says the proposed facilities are badly needed in Jersey:

"We know that there is a real need in Jersey for further dementia care facilities, and critically that these should be enabling residents to live well with dementia.

"At LV, we are immensely pleased with the designs put forward to planning for this new development. They are maximising the quality of living for the residents and the surrounding community. It is a big investment by us into what we believe will be a premium care facility for our island."

The proposed dementia village would be run by LV Care Group

Sadie Le Sueur-Rennard, the Constable of St Saviour, says while she would prefer to minimise further development in the parish, she supports the project as long as the final development bears a resemblance to the plans submitted:

"It seems a good idea on paper, and we thought it would be quite pleasant. But - call me cynical - we've often seen with developments in Jersey that revised plans can be submitted that are different to what was originally proposed.

"The dementia village will be really, really lovely. It would be fabulous for families who have a loved one living with dementia, as it can be a lot of pressure to know they're in a safe environment where they're happy. To me, this seems a fabulous idea."

Parishioners could have their say on the plans if the St Saviour Roads Committee chooses to put it to a Parish Assembly once the plans are formally presented to them.

It's understood decision on whether to hold a Parish Assembly could be made as soon as next week.
