Organ donors to be recognised with public memorial

Organ and blood donors will be recognised by a new public memorial in Jersey.

States Members have unanimously backed a suggestion from Deputy Lucy Stephenson.

The former journalist told the Assembly she had spoken to many families of donors who feel there should be an acknowledgement of the lives they have saved.

"Not everyone will agree with donation, and not everyone will want to be a donor - and that is absolutely their right, but we also should not be afraid of talking about it, and we certainly shouldn't shy away from publicly recognising - in a sensitive and of course appropriate way - those who have given the gift of life to others in this way."

The deputy hopes it encourages people to have conversations with their loved ones about their own wishes on their death.

"As of March, there were seven islanders waiting for transplants.

"That is seven people in our community who would benefit from donors being found for them.  Seven people whose lives are potentially in danger if donors are not found for them."

The memorial will be created as part of the development of the new acute hospital at Overdale, funded through the Percentage for Art Scheme which obliges developers to provide a piece of public art.

The design, location and cost of the memorial will be decided at a later date.
