No Take Zone Proposed For East Bays

A 'No Take Zone' has been proposed for Archirondel and Anne Port to boost the area's biodiversity.

The zones aim to protect and preserve biodiversity in the area by banning fishing trawling and dredging.

Societe Jersiaise, who has lodged the proposals, say that NTZs have social and economic benefits for the area.

Those include:

• Increased tourism and recreational activities;

• Opportunities for scientific research and education;

• Positive impacts on human health;

• Enhancing the aesthetic and cultural significance of an area.

It will be the second NTZ in the island, after politicians voted unanimously to make Portlet one in April 2022.

The UK introduced its first NTZ in Lundy Island in 2003 which saw landable-sized lobsters in the area increase by nearly 430% by 2007.

Anne Port and Archirondel make up 0.03% of Jersey's territorial waters according to the charity.
