Newborn babies will receive library membership from birth

All newborn babies in Jersey are being given a reading care package and a library membership.

If a little islander enters the world starting from, Monday, 22 July 2024, the Superintendent Registrar will give them their first book bag, full of goodies.

'My First Book Bag' contains a library card, two books and information for parents on supporting their babies' speech through linguistic tips.

Parents and carers will also be given tips on sessions and events held at Jersey Library, including Baby Bounce, Rhyme and Play and Toddler Time sessions.

Chief Librarian Ed Jewell says it has been proven that sharing books early with children helps significantly boost the development of speech, language, and communication skills.

"My First Book Bag will form the cornerstone of a framework we are working to create, to ensure our libraries support literacy and learning for everyone in our community.

"We are delighted to be working with the team at the Office of the Superintendent Registrar to make sure every family has the chance to access Jersey Library’s resources and services."
