New-look Youth Assembly hopes to attract more teens

The Jersey Youth Assembly has been relaunched, hoping to draw more young people into influencing what happens in the island.

It is open to all 14 to 19 year olds.

They can choose topics that matter to them to investigate, question ministers and work with States members in scrutiny.

An 'executive' group will be elected annually by their peers to lead the work of the JYA.

Members will meet fortnightly during term-time and there will be two debates each year in the States Chamber that will mirror the style of regular Assembly meetings.

The States Greffe, which provides support services to the island's parliament, says the new format of the JYA will mean people can be as involved as they wish, and fit it around their studies or other commitments.

The new-look JYA includes a website and social media presence on X, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.

Deputy Carina Alves, Chair of the Political Awareness and Education Sub-Committee, said: "We know, from feedback we have received, that many young people are disengaged with local politics and often feel that their views go unheard.

"Driving youth participation and engagement in politics is crucial for the future of the island and we are confident that the newly relaunched JYA will bridge the gap between the States Assembly and our young people.

"We want to see as many young Islanders as possible join and we would encourage parents to discuss the opportunities the JYA presents with their children."

Molly Gladwin, Education Manager at the States Greffe, says the JYA is also aimed at boosting leadership and communication skills.

"It will offer members the chance to learn and develop key skills for their university applications and future careers, the opportunity to link up with other Youth Parliament initiatives outside of Jersey, as well as shadowing and mentoring programs with States Members and industry professionals."
