New Free Saturday Art School

ArtHouse Jersey is launching a new six-week art school for secondary school pupils.

The free lessons are open to all students aged 11 to 16 with a passion for art and start in October.

Standard Chartered has sponsored ArtHouse £10,000, enabling children to pursue their passions without parents fearing costs.

Director of ArtHouse, Tom Dingle, says the team believes offering lessons at no cost to families is important to the charity.

"Different students have different levels of access and we wanted to make sure that particularly students for whom price may be a barrier have an opportunity to attend Saturday school and attend tuition like this to be able to expand their skills and also meet others."

"It was very important for us to remove that barrier because it could be the difference between a talented student attending or not."

ArtHouse and Standard Chartered chose secondary school pupils because college students are already sure of their futures, and primary school children have regular access to art.

Young people attending the school will be treated as artists and collectively and individually create different bodies of work over the six-week course.

A wide range of forms will be explored in the lessons, from sculpting to painting and textiles to even installation.

Students interested in art should speak to their art teachers about the opportunity to join the Saturday classes held at Jersey College for Girls.
