New Fire & Ambulance HQ Dedicated To Len Norman

The proposed new headquarters for Jersey's Fire and Ambulance services will be dedicated to the late Constable Len Norman.

States members voted 41-to-1 in favour of naming the planned facility after the former Home Affairs Minister in recognition of his 37 years' service to island politics.

Constable Norman died last year at the age of 73. He was Jersey's longest-serving States member at the time of his death.

The proposition to dedicate the development to his memory was put forward by his successor as Home Affairs Minister, Deputy Gregory Guida:

"Len was one of only two individuals to have served as a Deputy, Senator and Connétable over the course of his long career in the States. During this time, he served on and presided over many committees, and his impact on our island life has, without question, been vast.

"It is my belief that naming a new Headquarters, wherever it may be built, in Len’s honour is a fitting way to honour his service to our island, and particularly the impact he made as Minister for Home Affairs."

There was one vote against the plans, from St Helier Deputy Mary Le Hegarat.

She says Constable Norman 'did the island proud' and 'looked after his parishioners well' during his time in office; adding that her vote has nothing to do with him personally, but rather in principle, she doesn't support erecting statues or naming buildings after individuals.

Deputy Le Hegarat suggested there may be other ways to honour the late Constable instead.

It is yet to be agreed where the combined Fire and Ambulance station will be built, following a dispute between politicians over the former Police Station site at Rouge Bouillon, which is currently still used by Jersey Fire & Rescue.

Jersey's Fire and Ambulance Services are currently based in two separate facilities on Rouge Bouillon

Home Affairs wanted the site to be redeveloped but remain used by the emergency services, while Education wanted to use it to extend Rouge Bouillon school.

States Members agreed in principle last July to let the school extend onto the site 'unless a better option is found'.
