New Bergerac series to have 'subtle nods' to the original

Islanders are encouraged to attend the Jersey premiere of Bergerac, as lead star Damien Moloney shares his excitement for the new series and to give people here something else to be 'proud' of.

Bergerac's cast will be gracing the red carpet on the Waterfront on Monday 24 February for the Jersey premiere of the new series.

Cineworld is welcoming cast, crew and special guests at 3:30 pm.

Islanders can come down and interact with the stars and watch guest arrivals.

Brian Constantine, Executive Producer of Bergerac, says it is an honour to hold the Bergerac premiere in Jersey, the home of this iconic series.

"Bringing the show back to where it all began is incredibly special, and we’re thrilled to celebrate this moment with the local community.

"With many of the cast, creators, and crew in attendance, it promises to be an unforgettable evening, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Bergerac."

Jersey features heavily in the show, with sites including St Ouen's Bay, Plemont and the Royal Square included in filming.

However, the majority of filming was shot in Devon and other locations.

Lead actor Damien Moloney says he is excited for people from Jersey to watch and be proud of it.

"This is a reimagined version, rather than a copy and paste.

"The wonderful thing about Toby [Whithouse]'s scripts are there are so many subtle nods to the original, that I think people who loved the original will spot them because they are subtle; and they'll go 'oh my god! Oh no!'.

"It's important to nod back to the original because it was so successful and people loved it."

When I was telling people I was playing Bergerac they were like:

'First thing is... Is there alcohol? Is he an alcoholic?'

And, I'm like 'Yes... yes he is!'

'Are we going to see the car?'

I was like 'I can't tell you that'

And, they're like 'What about Charlie Hungerford?'

'Yes, Charlie Hungerford is back but this time it's played by Zoë Wanamaker!'

And, they're like 'Oh my god! That's brilliant!'.

Damien continues to say there are many benefits to reimagining the world of Bergerac.

"We don't have to stick to the stories of John Nettles' Bergerac.

"The world has moved on in many ways, and what I love about Toby's scripts is that there's a real sense of homage to what's gone before and to honour that, but not necessarily to emulate it.

"It's the most excited people have been for a new job of mine because of the history of the show and because of how beloved it was.

"With these sorts of beloved shows, it was such a big deal to watch the next episodes of the shows."

The series is free to watch on the streaming platform 'U' and launches on 27 February 2025.
