Liberation Day is officially Jersey's National Day

Liberation Day

Liberation Day has been announced as Jersey's National Day in the States Assembly.

Politicians have voted overwhelmingly in favour of marking 9 May as the island's National Day.

It comes just before islanders celebrate Liberation 80.

Jersey's Minister for International Development wanted a prominent day in Jersey's history to be made a National Day.

Liberation Day took the popular vote, with 87% of consultation respondents advocating for the day.

The Corn Riots, which is marked on 28 September, came in second and Battle of Flowers third.

Not only will Jersey see a National Day, but it also has a National Anthem too.

'Beautiful Jersey', or 'Man beau p’tit Jèrri', is officially the song that will be played at major events and sporting competitions.

The chorus of “Beautiful Jersey” (in either English or Jèrriais) is played at such events until a formal anthem is selected.

- Minister for International Development, Deputy Carolyn Labey

Deputy Montfort Tadier suggested making the Corn Riots a National Day as well. However, States Members disagreed with this idea.

He says he was not proposing another Bank Holiday.

"We can have days of national importance like the Air Display and Battle of Flowers - those are not Bank Holidays or Public Holidays - but it doesn't stop them being of cultural significance."
