Jersey's Search For A Missing Eagle

Steppe Eagle

Falconers from St John's Manor are searching for a missing large Brown Eagle, which went missing from the site on Friday.

Hemlock the Steppe Eagle flew up to sit on a wall before being taken by a gust of wind.

The bird has been at the manor for 14 years.

Head Falconer, Richard Hall, is asking for islanders to keep an eye out for him.

"It's a large brown eagle, you can't mistake it.

"When you look up in the sky, and there are birds gliding around, they're common buzzards. He's three times the size of that."

It is thought the eagle is likely to be in a field somewhere rather than flying around.

"Don't approach the eagle. It's not going to attack you, but you're likely to spook him, and then he'll fly off, and we're back to square one."

*UPDATE: Hemlock was found on Tuesday (14 Nov) and returned to his aviary. Jersey Falconry says he is eating plenty and is 'totally unconcerned' about the furore he caused.
