Passengers will be able to get to and from Jersey's airport or harbour by electric hire car from next week, using a new A2B service.

Ports of Jersey has partnered with car sharing service EVie to offer a new transport option for travellers.

The service will launch next Thursday (5 September) with ten parking spaces at the airport and four at the Elizabeth Terminal.

People wanting to use A2B must check the EVie app for available cars and spaces before embarking on their journey.

They can then drive to their destination and park in one of the dedicated EVie spaces.

It is estimated to cost around £10 an hour or £50 for 24 hours.

Matt Thomas, Ports of Jersey CEO, says ideas like this are already popular in other countries across the world.

"Hardly anyone in Vancouver owns a car.

"This idea of  - you pick up a car and drop it somewhere else, you're only paying to use a car when you need one rather than having it sit outside your house or apartment all the time - it's a model that's already working elsewhere in the world, so fingers crossed it works in Jersey as well."

Mr Thomas says the A2B service supports Ports' aims of sustainable travel:

"While our primary role is to provide essential connectivity for Islanders, we have an ambitious sustainability strategy, to support our customers to decarbonise their journeys to and from the airport."

EVie’s CEO, Nick Perchard-Rees, says they want to see 60% of passengers travel to terminals via sustainable methods by 2030.

"Our new A2B service directly supports this initiative by offering electric, flexible, cost-effective transport that also lowers the number of journeys required.

"Working with the Ports team across various departments has demonstrated their commitment to reducing environmental impact."
