Jersey gives £300,000 to Myanmar's earthquake relief efforts

Jersey Overseas Aid is giving £100,000 to three charities that are helping with relief efforts in Myanmar.

Thousands of people are feared to have died in the Southeast Asian country, with millions of people displaced and in need of help.

It is estimated that a third of the population, around 19 million, needed aid before the earthquake.

The 7.7 magnitude earthquake has destroyed infrastructure, including roads, bridges and buildings, leaving civilians without basic services.

JOA is giving £300,000 on behalf of Jersey to:

  • British Red Cross - £100,000 - Supporting the Myanmar Red Cross to deliver first aid, distribute emergency supplies and deploy mobile health teams,
  • People in Need - £100,000 - Providing emergency aid through local partners,
  • Age International - £100,000 - Supporting the elderly and people with disabilities, including food, water, medical care and shelter.
