Island Energy to face charges over fatal Haut du Mont explosion

Jersey Magistrate's Court

Jersey's gas company, Island Energy, faces charges over the explosion on Pier Road in St Helier in December 2022 which killed ten people.

The utility company will appear in Jersey's Magistrate's Court next week following a two-year long investigation by the Health and Safety Inspectorate (HSI).

10 people were killed in an explosion at the Haut du Mont flats 10 December 2022.

Island Energy has been summonsed to answer criminal charges under  Article 21 (a) of the Health and Safety at Work (Jersey) Law 1989, namely that it 'failed in its duties to ensure the health and safety of employees' and that it 'failed in its duties to ensure the health and safety of persons not in their employment'.

The HSI and police investigations ran side-by-side as part of Operation Spire.

Specialist inspectors and technical experts from Britain's Health and Safety Executive also supported the investigations.

Former Island Energy employees Neil Armstrong (56), Lee Ward (57), and John Wright (59) were charged separately by the police last month with 10 counts of gross negligence manslaughter each.

Both cases are due to be heard in the Magistrate's Court on 14 March.
