There's a new initiative to make Jersey greener, and islanders have been invited to help by adopting free plants.

It's called 'Grouville Grows' and will be running tomorrow (Saturday 1 June)  at St Clement's Parish Hall from 9.30am to 1.00pm. 

Participants will have the opportunity to create and take home an installation filled with plants for their own gardens, patios or windowsills. 

Those planning on coming along are being encouraged to reuse their own pots, but recycled pots and boards will be provided.

The project focuses on the principles of permaculture - which embodies the principles of 'people care', 'earth care' and 'fair share'. 

It's hoped that by taking on the task of looking after the plants, the environment will benefit and biodiversity will be boosted, but also islanders will see an improvement in their physical and mental health

The idea is that this task will also work towards bringing together the community.

Sarah Howard, who's running the project, tells us more about the impact she hopes the it will have: 

"We're encouraging islanders to come and bring their recycled pots to encourage pollination and pollinator corridors throughout the parish and further afield into the island. 

"As we plant seeds we've been gathering together in small groups, talking and communicating, this is helping us all to slow down.

"We are connecting and recognising that we are all struggling in different ways, and the act of being in company with each other and being physically active really helps to build a community. 

"As we go through the crises of cost of living, climate change and wellbeing, we are learning to look after our physical health, mental health and the environment around us.

"We're reducing our carbon footprint, looking after the soil, looking after our health and looking after each other." 

Grouville Grows project 

The usual Grouville Repair Café will be taking place in the same location, where islanders can bring along household items that need a bit of TLC to get repaired by other members of the community.
