Employment Forum Reviewing Zero-Hours Contracts

The Employment Forum is evaluating the way zero-hours contracts operate in Jersey.

A consultation is running until Wednesday 31 August along with a survey.

After that deadline passes, the Forum will present its findings to the next Social Security Minister.

Forum chair, Carla Benest, says this is a good opportunity to take an in-depth, factual look at how they're used.

"All employees - regardless of the type of contract they work under - are entitled to the same employment protections.

As part of the consultation exercise, the Forum will be engaging with the Jersey community to consider in detail the current balance of rights and responsibilities that apply to both employees and employers.

One of the Forum's key aims is to understand if the right balance is being struck between employers and employers in Jersey and, if not, what needs to be done to ensure the fair treatment of both groups."

The last States Assembly voted to ban exclusivity clauses in zero-hours contracts and to review the legislation to make sure employees on zero-hours contracts are protected, following a successful proposition from Deputy Geoff Southern.
