Islanders are being invited to get their electric blankets inspected by Jersey Fire and Rescue, with the aim of preventing winter fires.

The Fire Service is checking blankets at Western Fire Station from 10am - 3pm on Thursday (17 October) and at Fire Headquarters om Rouge Bouillon on Friday (18 October).

If they don't pass the test, they'll be disposed of.

People who have their blankets taken off them will be compensated with a 10% off Powerhouse voucher, which they can use towards a replacement. 

Jersey Fire and Rescue has issued this advice for those cosying up with the blankets this winter: 

• Regular Inspections: Examine your electric blanket for any signs of wear, fraying, or damage before use.
• Follow Manufacturer Instructions: Adhere to the manufacturer's instructions regarding usage, washing, and storage of electric blankets.
• Avoid Overheating: Never leave an electric blanket turned on for an extended period, and switch it off before getting into bed.
• No Pets or Heavy Objects: Keep pets and heavy objects off the electric blanket to prevent damage.
• Replace Old Blankets: If your electric blanket is more than ten years old or shows signs of wear, consider replacing it with a newer model.

"Electric blankets are essentially an electrical item... electrical items are the second greatest cause of property fires in the UK and Jersey."

"Given it's an electrical appliance that lives on your bed, and is possibly used when you're asleep - although it's recommended the blankets are used when you are not asleep - to get them checked regularly is jolly important."
