Dylan John Pounds has been found guilty of killing father and son Dean and Charlie Lowe by dangerous driving.

The 29-year-old has been convicted for the deaths of Dean, 48, and 11-year-old Charlie in a hit-and-run on 5 August 2023.

Pounds admitted causing death by careless driving but denied causing death by dangerous driving.

Following a six-day trial at Jersey's Royal Court, listening to witnesses and expert evidence, the jurats agreed the former apprentice electrician was guilty of the more serious offence.

Detective Chief Inspector Craig Jackson read a statement outside of court on behalf of the Lowe family.

"It's coming up to 15 months since our whole world fell apart.

"As everyone can imagine it has been an incredibly traumatic time for all the family and friends of Dean and Charlie.

"We would like to thank the Jersey community for all the love and support, we won't ever forget it, like we won't forget our beautiful boys.

"Thank you very much."

Dylan Pounds is guilty of the following:

• Causing the death of Dean Lowe by dangerous driving on La Rue de Fauvic on 5 August 2023,
• Causing the death of Charlie Lowe by dangerous driving on La Rue de Fauvic on 5 August 2023,
• Failing to stop and report a road traffic collision,
• Dangerous driving.

He had admitted failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

The Deputy Bailiff thanked the public gallery for their composure during the 'difficult trial to listen to'.

Passing down the verdict, the Deputy Bailiff says Pounds’ driving was ‘significantly impaired’.

"You made no attempt to avoid Dean or Charlie Lowe.”

"You failed to stop because you knew you were drunk and you knew you had been involved in an accident.”

Senior Investigating Officer Inspector David Turnbull says the States of Jersey Police give their deepest to the family and friends of Dean and Charlie Lowe.

"[Their] tragic death last August has left an indelible mark on our island's community.

"We are grateful for the decision of the court today, the investigation has been very challenging and thorough.

"I'm grateful for our officers and staff who have worked tirelessly with our colleagues in the Law Officer's department to deliver today's verdict.

"This verdict serves as a reminder about the responsibilities we all carry on our roads and the grave consequences of failing to meet those responsibilities."

The court had heard how Pounds had consumed at least nine pints of lager during a day-long drinking session at multiple pubs.

After leaving the Dolphin in Gorey, at around 9:20 pm, he took a bus back to the Pembroke, the same pub where the Lowe family had earlier been celebrating a friend's birthday.

Pounds collected his work van and drove off.

He ploughed into the father and son as they walked home together along Rue de Fauvic. There was no evidence Pounds attempted an emergency brake.

Phone records show the 29-year-old rang a friend he left on the bus on Snapchat from around 9:37 p.m. to 9:40 p.m.

He did the same at 10:04 pm and 12:23 am.

A member of DVS found Pounds' heavily damaged van at 10:50 pm and the police investigated the scene the following morning at West Park.

Pounds will be sentenced on 9 December 2024.
