Drug Smuggler Jailed For Eight Years

A 39-year-old man who attempted to smuggle drugs into the island is beginning a prison sentence of eight years and three months.

Shaun Halliwell, who is from Manchester, travelled to Jersey from the city in March.

He was stopped by the Customs and Immigration Service and questioned about the reason for his trip. Halliwell told officers that he was here to see his daughter.

Officers swabbed his luggage which came back positive for 'controlled drugs', which lead them to believe that Halliwell had drugs hidden inside his body.

They found three packages containing more than 80 grams of cocaine, one and a half grams of cannabis and small amounts of heroin and crack cocaine.

The drugs had a combined street value of between £12,000 -  £20,000.

Paul Le Monnier, senior manager at JCIS says that officers continue to 'target' drug smugglers to ensure Jersey 'remains a safe place to live'.
