Doctors Given Right To Prescribe Cannabis

Medicinal cannabis can be prescribed to patients in Jersey by the end of next February.

The States have agreed for all doctors to be able to dispense the drug.

Deputy Montfort Tadier has been campaigning for its legalisation for several years and took a proposition to the States to speed up its introduction .

He says this will benefit so many people.

“What this allows is for more of a conversation to take place which is patient-driven and patient-led via the very important step that is the GP in the community, so that they can feed back to the consultants, expertise can be developed but always listening to the needs of the patients.”

Following a vote in the States on Tuesday, Health Minister Deputy Richard Renouf will now have to bring forward the necessary laws to take effect before 28th February 2019.

The Minister had expressed concern about all doctors being able to prescribe medicinal cannabis, rather than just specialist consultants.
