Director of Public Health Appointed

A new Director of Public Health has been appointed for Jersey.

Professor Peter Bradley, who currently works for Public Health England, will replace Dr. Susan Turnbull who was the Medical Officer of Health.

She retired last October.

The government says Professor Bradley will be the main independent adviser on all public health matters, including health protection and improvement.

"This will modernise the role, bringing it into line with the requirements of the British Faculty of Public Health. This change has also been made in the other Crown Dependencies." - Government of Jersey.

He'll start in June.

“I’m delighted to be moving to Jersey to take on this exciting and challenging role.

“I’m looking forward to using my 17 years’ experience working in public health to lead and advise on all public health matters for the Government of Jersey at this challenging time.” - Professor Bradley.

Dr. Ivan Muscat  - who has guided Jersey through the pandemic - remains Deputy Medical Officer of Health.

The Health Minister has welcomed the appointment:

“Professor Peter Bradley will be an invaluable addition to the Strategic Policy, Planning and Performance department. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge, experience and expertise and is ideally qualified to lead Public Health.” - Deputy Richard Renouf.

The recruitment process was overseen by the Jersey Appointments Commission and the British Faculty of Public Health and managed by the Government Resourcing Team and a specialist executive search firm, Penna.

The government says on and off-Island candidates were targeted in the initial search and formally applied for the role, and six candidates were short-listed.
