Tapas bar Casa Paco raises £1,000 for Spanish flood survivors

St Helier tapas bar Casa Paco has raised more than £1,000 for Spanish flood relief efforts.

Paco Lora donated 10% of his takings from last weekend (9 - 10 November), amounting to 1438 euros, to the Spanish Red Cross to help survivors of flash floods.

More than 200 died in the eastern part of the country after the heavy rain devasted towns, villages and cities.

Emergency services and third party organisations have been working to evacuate thousands and search for those who are still missing.

Paco had been watching the tragedy unfold on the news with his wife and cousin and decided he wanted to do something.

He told Channel 103:

"I've got friends and they've lost absolutely everything. They've lost their business, they've lost their cars.  Everything that is material, you know you can replace with time, but there's been a lot of lives lost as well. It's been quite a disaster."

Paco's cousin Chelo Lora said they still have a lot of family back home in Valencia:

"Seeing the devastation of where we were born, where we were raised, it's still very close to home.

"Given that we couldn't physically volunteer and be there on the ground we thought 'let's try and participate in some way'.

"Regardless of whether we know them or not, we just really feel for everybody, for people who would have been our neighbours in our home towns."

The pair have thanked islanders for their generosity in helping to raise the vital funds.
