Carers offered free training sessions for dementia

Jersey carers are being offered a free training programme for looking after islanders with dementia.

Those caring for people with the condition can join the free programme, which is made up of four sessions, either in the morning or evening for their convenience.

Dementia Jersey is heading the initiative, which focuses on giving advice and tips.

They will learn different tactics to support people with dementia and how to spot the signs and symptoms associated with the condition.

Claudine Snape, CEO of Dementia Jersey, says they approach training in a unique way.

"The training is focused on giving practical tips to help people become well-equipped carers, and a lot of that is understanding the care they need to provide for themselves and understanding their own responses to stress and have practical solutions in place for their own well-being.

"We do a particular simulation to help people put themselves in the shoes of someone with dementia and think about how challenging it might be to communicate if you have problems with all of your senses.

"We use props to make it feel more difficult to hear, to see, to touch, to perhaps do up a zip or a button on your shirt if you're wearing gloves for example."
