Buy Cheap Chargers, Risk Fires

Jersey Fire and Rescue Service is warning islanders about the risks of buying cheap chargers and batteries online for their electric bikes and scooters.

It can be tempting to head to Amazon for a cheap, off-brand charger or battery replacement after seeing the price tag that comes with official-sourced products.

E-bikes and scooters are powered by lithium-ion batteries, which can cause fires if charged incorrectly, so if it does it could cost more in the long run.

Watch Commander Toby Aubert says fortunately, there have not been many fires in the island due to this, but it is one of the fastest-growing fire risks in the UK.

"E-bikes are a fantastic, environmentally friendly and low-cost way of getting around but we’d ask owners to follow some key safety advice, particularly in relation to where and how they charge their device."

The Fire Service recommends that chargers and batteries bought from an authorised distributor or manufacturer are not overused.

When the battery is full, turn the charger off and do not charge it overnight or for long periods to avoid overcharging.

It is also advised to avoid charging batteries indoors - it is best to use a stable, inflammable surface.
