Another £8.3 million will be spent on La Moye Prison’s ongoing redevelopment.
The extensive project started 12 years ago, after inspections found the facility fell short of modern standards.
The next phase will see improvements to the prison’s vehicle gate, search areas and office space.
£6.5 million is coming from the Criminal Offences Confiscation Fund, which is cash seized from criminals such as fraudsters.
The remaining funding is coming from an existing budget allocated for the work.
That work is expected to be completed by late 2020.
“This current phase will ensure that the prison is a modern, safe and secure environment for both prisoners and staff. It will also mean that the unit can meet the changing needs of a prison in the 21st century.” – Constable Len Norman, Home Affairs Minister
