2024 in the top 10 warmest years in Jersey

Beauport

Jersey has recorded its 7th warmest year on record.

The average temperature in 2024 was 12.94°C, 0.55°C warmer than the 30-year average from 1991 to 2020.

Islanders experienced an abnormally warm start to the year, with temperatures peaking around August.

31 July was Jersey's hottest day, at 29.7°C. The coldest temperature recorded last year was -1.4°C on 10 January.

Paul Aked, Jersey Met's Head of Meteorology, says the daily maximum temperatures for 2024 were on average 0.32°C higher than the long-term average, however the night-time minimums were 0.81°C above the long-term average.

"It is in this detail, you can see the impacts warmer nights are having, contributing to the overall annual temperature being the 7th warmest on record."

2024 was also sunnier but wetter, and with warmer seas, than the 30-year average.

Jersey saw 2127.9 hours of sunshine, but also 929 mm of rainfall.

The average sea temperature for the year was 13.71°C, just 0.24°C lower than the warmest year in 2022.

The island experienced ground frost on only nine days last year - almost 37 days fewer than expected.

Mr Aked says we should be prepared for the potential to see more extreme weather events as our temperature rises.

"Along with temperature rise, for every degree our atmosphere warms, the atmosphere can hold 7% more moisture, adding to the wetter weather."

Environment Minister Steve Luce has thanked Jersey Met for the 'crucial' information.

"The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) last week that January 2025 was the hottest January ever recorded, globally.

"The trends we are witnessing have a huge impact on everyone."

"With increasing temperatures are associated impacts on biodiversity, food security, and sea levels – which as an Island is greatly concerning.

"This year, I will continue to encourage islanders to reduce their carbon footprint through the policies in our Carbon Neutral Roadmap.

"We must ensure Jersey remains on a pathway to net zero by 2050, in line with the internationally recognised targets of the Paris Agreement."

Another dark red stripe will be added to the Climate Stripes on the Waterfront, as a result of the 2024 temperature.

The government believes by using colour, the stripes show how Jersey’s climate is warming over time.

Once the new stripe has been added, there will be a total of 131 stripes – each representing a year from 1894 through to 2024.
