Jersey's government has agreed to pay more than £2.3million to an eye surgeon it sacked unfairly a week before he was due to start work.

The out-of-court settlement with Dr. Amar Alwitry concludes an almost decade-long legal battle.

Speaking in the States Assembly, the Chief Minister said the sum is 'substantially less' than the figures previously suggested.

"The SEB (States Employment Board) has done its very best to limit the damages as much as possible and has taken and followed extensive, local, and UK professional advice."

Legal costs are additional and will be decided by the court at a later stage.

The Royal Court found in favour of Dr Alwitry in 2019, after he was offered a job in 2012 and dismissed soon after.

He later filed an official complaint against the States Employment Board.

The SEB made several attempts to overturn the court's decision, which were unsuccessful.
