More Than 6,000 Pupils Not In School

6,248 Jersey students at States-run schools are currently working from home.

37 students are currently known to have coronavirus, and 11 classes are closed.

143 teachers are absent for Covid-related reasons. 95 are isolating, shielding, or waiting for a Covid test, 33 are off ill, and 15 are absent 'for family reasons'.

133 non-teaching staff are off. 77 are isolating, shielding, or waiting for a Covid test, 42 are off ill, and 14 are absent 'for family reasons'.

73.8% of secondary school pupils are working from home, along with 39.6% of primary school students.

The figures are based on having 785 Jersey teachers, 958 other school staff, 6700 primary pupils, and 5071 secondary students.

The States rejected an emergency proposition to close schools at the end of last week, rather than the end of term.

Education Minister Senator Tracey Vallois, who was absent from last week's vote due to ill health, said she raised several concerns in November when coronavirus cases started to spike, but that medical advice was for students to stay at school.
