Free Parking Permits For Frontline Staff

More than 650 permits will be given to hospital workers, Salvation Army volunteers and police officers in Jersey to park for free, close to where they work, during the coronavirus pandemic.

This comes into effect from tomorrow (Saturday 28 March). This comes just days after a call from Deputy Rob Ward for all healthworkers parking charges to be waived.

That means parking will be restricted to the public, particularly in Patriotic Street Car Park.

Parking restrictions for carers have also been relaxed for carers. Government parking officers have been told to allow motorists with St Helier carers permits to park on the street, as long as they are not causing an obstruction.

"Jersey’s frontline workers and volunteers are key to our management of Covid-19, and these parking permits will make it a little easier for them. We are also making a stressful situation a little easier for anyone who is delivering food or providing home care by recognising Parish of St Helier carers parking permits.

"We are all grateful for the long shifts and challenging work that all these people undertake, and I think Islanders will welcome the provision this support." - Deputy Kevin Lewis, Infrastructure Minister.

500 permits have been given to hospital staff, including maintenance teams, so they can get into Patriotic Street for free.

The visitors’ parking and ground floor disabled parking is still open but from 8am tomorrow (28 March), the rest of the Patriotic Street car park will be reserved solely for Hospital workers.

Anyone with a vehicle currently parked in Patriotic Street which they can't move (for example if the owner is in isolation) should call Parking Control on 01534 448669.

150 permits are being given to police officers for Green Street, who have to take their PPE (personal protective equipment) home every day in case they need to respond to a call from home.

Seven permits are available for Salvation Army volunteers who are helping islanders in need by providing a food bank in Minden Place.

Free parking in Layby 5 and 6 on Victoria Avenue will continue.
