Tyler Walks For Australian Fire Victims

Local resident to walk from Portelet to Town in full firefighting uniform to help animals and families who have lost their homes.

The walk, which starts at 8am, is approximately 15.4 miles / 24.7km long. Tyler Thorne will follow the same route as the Guernsey Half Marathon - with the addition of 2.3 miles at the beginning from Portelet to the Shingle Bank Nature Reserve at the Route De La Rocque .

Tyler says it will be a real challenge walking this distance in full fire fighting gear: "The uniform will consist of fire retardant trousers, jacket, helmet with chin strap and a self contained breathing apparatus cylinder.

"50% of the donations I receive will go to the Rotary National Bushfires Appeal (Australian) which supports families who have lost homes, communities, friends and family members. The other 50% of the donations will go to WWF Australia which rehabilitates wildlife and restores natural habitats affected by the bushfires.

"People all over the world have been extremely generous during this crucial time in Australia however, I have selected two charities that have had slightly less public awareness as of late.

"I spent 8 of my formative years growing up in Australia and as an Australian citizen, this is a cause very close to my heart. Although recent cooler conditions and rain have brought some relief, more than 30 fires are still burning. The country is still in the midst of the summer months therefore, more heat and windy conditions are forecast. It has been suggested it will take hundreds of years for the country to recover from this disaster which is why I want to help in whatever way I can."

If you would like to donate then Tyler has a JustGiving page www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/tylerthorne

The Fire Station also has a donation bucket if anyone would like to drop off cash donations.
