A green waste collection is be trialled in Guernsey this summer.
People who take part will pay to have their gardening material collected.
Guernsey Waste is looking for businesses to tender for the trial. If it is successful, it could be made permanent.
But householders will be charged for the service, as it needs to cover its costs.
The busy green waste site will close this summer, as Ronez sets up a new quarry there. A smaller garden waste drop off will be set up at nearby Mont Cuet.
It's hoped the collection service will reduce the number of cars dropping off garden waste each month over the summer, which can often top 7,000.
In a 2021 survey, more than a fifth of households said they would pay for regular household collections, and a similar proportion said they 'would be likely to'.
13% said they'd pay £100 or more, 18% would pay £75 or more, 25% would pay £60 or more while the majority would be willing to pay around £50 a year.
“Where households have the space, we would always encourage them to compost as much of their garden material at home as possible, along with any suitable kitchen waste.
That also saves them the trouble of having to drop off their green waste somewhere, and can provide natural fertiliser that is rich in nutrients and perfect for the garden.
Where that is not viable, households can bring their garden material to us directly, or use the paid for drop-off point at Le Friquet. The introduction of a regular collection will provide another option.” - Ben Henry, Guernsey Waste Recycling Officer.
