Environment and Infrastructure has published a plan to ease traffic congestion around the Bridge, as multiple housing developments are set to begin.

A number of sites in the north of the island are earmarked for significant new housing developments, which could see more than 1,000 new homes built.

Environment and Infrastructure say their completion will ease the housing crisis, but put additional pressure on the roads..

The 'Better Transport Plan' hopes to make travelling by foot, bike and bus more convenient - to reduce islanders' reliance on cars and ultimately ease traffic congestion.

The cost will be covered by the Committee's existing budget and by developers.

Committee president Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez says the changes will come in time.

“Our road infrastructure is already not serving residents in the north anywhere near as well as it could, even before taking into account the additional pressure that would be caused by developing new housing – new housing which we badly need as a community.

This Plan will guide improvements to transport options as those developments move forward.

We want to be proactive in our efforts to minimise any negative impacts of likely new development, and use the opportunity to create in the process some additional benefits for the current and future residents alike.

However you prefer to travel, whether that’s by car or on foot or by bike or bus, or whether it just depends on how you’re feeling on the day, or the particular journey, we want to give you more choices, more freedom, and safer, less stressful ways to get around the island.”

She says the plans also include developing a travel app.
