Third Talking Bench Installed

A third 'Talking Bench' has been placed in Guernsey's town. They are aimed at getting people to talk to each other.

The latest one has been put in St Peter Port, joining others at Petit Bot and St Martins.

The idea for the benches came from Aileen Morgan, Colette Quertier and Sarah Bamford who all lost their sons to suicide and wanted to do something positive.

The 'Bench Ladies' say the plan is for more of these benches around the island to encourage people to talk, thereby improving lives.  They hope it will prompt simple conversation about the weather or favourite music, or simply listening to a stranger who might want to talk.

The new bench is in Market Square thanks to Bailiwick Estates, Skipton International and the charity GO.

Sarah Bamford says these benches are to encourage people to talk:

"We have painted out benches bright orange.  The aim is that you never walk past one of these benches without simply saying 'hello' 'or nice day' to somebody sitting on that bench. because nobody knows what anybody else is going through."

The benches all carry a plaque saying ‘Please Talk’.

“There is no substitute for talking to people which is why I am delighted to support this initiative. I'd encourage residents and those working or socialising in Town to take a moment and make time for a chat and brighten someone's day.” - Zoe Lihou, St Peter Port Constable.
