Swimmers get set for month-long sea challenge

'30 Bays in 30 Days' challenges islanders to take a dip in the sea at a different beach each day throughout July.

The annual mass sea-swim starts in Jersey on Sunday (30 June) with a group dip at Greve de Lecq (starts 11.30am).

In Guernsey, islanders will gather at Vazon on Monday evening (1 July) for a 6.30pm swim to kick-off the month-long challenge.

The idea started in Guernsey, to raise money for Le Bourg Hospice, and was picked up by Jersey in 2016, where Jersey Hospice Care and the National Trust for Jersey are joint beneficiaries of the popular fundraiser.

However, Cheri Strudwick, Director of Income Generation and Marketing, Jersey Hospice Care says that despite more people taking up sea swimming in recent years, the numbers signing up to take part in '30 Bays' in Jersey has dwindled:

“The funds raised from events like this are vital to keep our service running for all islanders with a life-limiting condition so, this year, we’re urging islanders to register to support us and have some fun along the way.”

Younger swimmers can take on an easier 12 Bays in 30 Days version, with a newly-designed map and sticker chart designed by local artists Lauren Radley to record their achievement.

Donna Le Marrec, Marketing and Events Manager, National Trust for Jersey added: "This challenge is all about getting out, having fun and exploring our beautiful coastline and there’s no better way to appreciate it then from the sea.”

Guernsey also has a shortened version of the swimming challenge, 9baysin30days for those short on time, new to the event or have a young family. This takes swimmers to the easier to access beaches which also have a kiosk, toilets and parking. Entry includes a free map and sticker pack.

Founder of the event, Liz Stonebridge says: “This event is very special to me as it was set up in memory of my mum and another close family member who were cared for at Les Bourgs Hospice.

"I know first-hand the incredible difference that the nursing team make to patients and their families and how important it is that we support them."

Registration can be made at Monday's group swim or online.
