If you've been considering giving up smoking but aren't sure where to turn for help, Guernsey Quitline's Stoptober campaign can help.
The initiative, which begins today under the strapline 'Quit Smoking and Breathe', offers a range of services that are all free - including nicotine replacement therapy such as patches, gum and lozenges.
Quitline manager Andrea Tostevin explains the thinking behind the Stoptober campaign:
"Some people find the idea and prospect of stopping smoking for good a little bit too daunting, however there's really good evidence that if you can stop for 28 days you are five times more likely to be able to go on and stop for good."
Andrea says that as the pandemic continues, quitting cigarettes is even more important. It's known that smokers are twice as likely to get pneumonia and five times more likely to get flu than non-smokers.
"Covid-19 is a disease that affects your lungs. We know that unfortunately that smokers who develop Covid-19 are more likely to have more serious conditions and go on to develop pneumonia."
