Renoir Exhibition To Attract Thousands More Tourists

Up to 18,000 people could travel to Guernsey for an exhibition celebrating Renoir, according to those behind the event.

The famous French painter spent five weeks on the island and was inspired to start painting landscapes after visiting Moulin Huet.

Since launching the Renoir Walk in 2019, for the last four years organisers have been planning the 'Renoir in Guernsey, 1883' exhibition.

Art for Guernsey founder David Ummels says the exhibition will attract a large number of people to the island.

"We listened to the hospitality sector and the tourism sector and we purposely positioned the exhibition at the end of the season. We expect conservatively 15,000 to 18,000 visitors - those people will be spending their money in the restaurants, in the cafes and shops.

This is an exhibition that will celebrate the inspiration that Renoir found in Guernsey in 1883 when he came to visit. It influenced his career and his style in a profound manner. We are celebrating the role that the island played.

It is much more than a fine art exhibition. It will be a real celebration of the island's rich cultural heritage, a fabulous opportunity to inspire school children and plenty of fun family events."

From the end of September, Candie Museum's showcasing a collection of fine art with activities also planned at the Priaulx Library, the Renoir Walk and the Art for Guernsey Gallery on Mansell Street.

"At the very heart of the Old Quarter, we will also have the exhibition of 530 children from Year 3 who have made little Renoirs. We are turning them into exhibiting artists."

Schoolchildren from Guernsey will have free access to the exhibition.

Tickets are now on sale and can be purchased online.
