A survey by Guernsey's Health Improvement Commission shows islanders want smoking banned outside places like pubs and sports venues.
The Health Improvement Commission surveyed 906 adults and 30 young people took part in focus groups.
There was broad support for 11 tougher anti tobacco measures.
89% agreed with banning smoking in children’s playgrounds and 79% supported making covered bus shelters smoke free.
More than 60% wanted smoking banned outside restaurants, cafés and sports venues.
75% wanted the legal age to buy tobacco products to rise from 18 to 21.
Adult smoking prevalence in the Bailiwick has reduced from 29% in the 1970s to 9% in 2023.
Youth smoking rates have also decreased from 11% in 2010 to 5% in 2022.
Tobacco Harm Reduction Officer Lucy Cave says it shows people in Guernsey support enhanced tobacco control measures.
“We conducted this research because despite local smoking rates reducing in recent times, smoking continues to cause around 10% of deaths of people aged 35 and older.
"Guernsey has a history of taking bold upstream measures to reduce smoking rates, and we wanted to understand the views of the public on steps that could be taken in the future to continue this work.
"Public opinion is a key part of policy making.”
Director of Public Health Dr Nicola Brink thanked the public for their views.
“This work and findings are so valuable in providing direction on future tobacco policy.
"We are grateful to the Health Improvement Commission for conducting this research but most importantly to all the adults and young people that gave their thoughts and feelings.
"This provides information to the Committee for Health & Social Care and the States of Guernsey to inform future policy development.”
