No imminent resolution in case of Guernsey woman Sarah Groves

The father of Sarah Groves says he doesn't want Guernsey to forget his daughter.

The 24-year-old Guernsey woman was found dead on a houseboat in India in April 2013.

Vic Groves says her case is technically still underway - but has been suspended since July 2021 because the accused, Dutchman Richard de Wit, is deemed medically unfit to stand trial.

"Most people have probably forgotten about this in Guernsey because we haven't released about this in a while, but the trial is still going on.

They convene every month in court and review his mental health and so far every month for the last three and a half years he has not been able to physically attend court and stand trial.

Until we get either a legal ruling on how you get out of this conundrum, or they reach a definitive conclusion to the trial then we can't close the inquest here.

And that is something that hangs over us rather heavily and we don't want it to go on forever."

Mr Groves says the changing UK Government leadership has delayed a solution.

"It was a tragedy that there was a change of government, we managed to get a very long and productive meeting with David Cameron immediately before he had to hand the reigns over unfortunately.

We thought we got some momentum going but unfortunately, under the new Labour regime, this hasn't worked out.

We haven't got that high-level contact anymore, we seem to have gone if anything in the last few months, backwards."

The family is promising to give the Guernsey public more regular updates.
