Night Ride Promoting Road Safety

The Guernsey Bicycle Group's annual event hopes to encourage the use of bike lights and reflective clothing.

Around 20 bikes covered in bright lights will make their way through St Martins lanes, from 6PM tonight. (23 November)

The Guernsey Bicycle Group will loop around The Captain's Hotel.

Committee member Alistair Carey says reflectors and lights save lives:

"Particularly for cycle commuters, both the evenings and the mornings will be dark now for the next four months.

So, it's important that people are reminded that they need their lights and they need to wear the appropriate clothing when they are on the roads in the darkness on their bicycles."

He says they have fun spreading a serious message:

"We are inviting people to put a lot of lights on their bicycles and we have prizes for the best displays.

One year, a man had a trailer and was pulling along a replica of a lighthouse festering with lights. That was quite extraordinary.

Most people have lights around their wheels, so they are highly visible, and it's amazing."

He added that anyone is welcome to join them tonight.
