Moving Sark Incinerator Crucial To Harbours Upgrade

A report says improvements to Maseline and Creux harbours are possible, but only if the island stops burning rubbish at its gateway.

The Sark Property Company used Simon Arrol, who has years of experience in marina and waterfront design, to report on the feasibility of making improvements to Sark's gateway.

He says it's possible both technically and financially, but not without moving the small incinerator inland.

It currently sits on Harbour Hill but is out of action, meaning waste is being burnt in a pit at Les Laches, on cliffs above the harbour.

Mr Arrol suggests a number of improvements at Maseline, the main passenger harbour:

  • shelter from north and north easterly gales by extending the harbour arm or using a remote breakwater
  • railings for passengers using the steps to the ferry
  • improved cargo facilities, including a crane on rails

For Creux, he suggests better facilities to store fishermen's gear and vintage style chain railings along the pier edge

In between the two harbours, at the foot of the hill, he recommends demolishing and rebuilding the cafe and incorporating a passenger waiting room. He says the toilet block needs to be modernised, with better showers for visitors to Creux.

The report is available on the Sark Property Company's website.
