Motorcycle provisional driving licence renewals legislation amended following COVID-19.

The Committee for the Environment & Infrastructure is pleased to advise that the driving licence legislation has now been amended to allow the Committee, in certain circumstances, to:

 Renew motorcycle provisional licence that have expired;

 Extend the period in which a provisional licence holder can undertake a repeat motorcycle training course (Direct Access).

This comes after some learner motorcyclists were unable to renew their provisional motorcycle licences, or to comply with the legislative requirements stipulated to validate those licences, as a result of the recent COVID-19 restrictions.

Following this amendment, the Committee has agreed that any provisional motorcycle licence that expired between the 1st March 2020 and 30th June 2020 can now be renewed, and a repeat motorcycle training course completed, up until and including the 31st October 2020.

In addition, where a provisional licence was previously renewed between 1 st March 2020 and 30th June 2020, and where the licence holder was then unable to complete a repeat motorcycle training course, it has been agreed that the holder can recommence riding immediately and has until 31st October 2020 in which to complete their motorcycle training course.

Anyone wishing to renew a motorcycle licence that expired between the 1st March 2020 and 30th June 2020 is asked to contact Driver and Vehicle Licensing on Tel: 243400 or via email at [email protected] for details on how to reapply.
