Islanders Reminded to Flush Only The Three Ps

Shaun Connelly and George de Carteret from Guernsey Water examine the sewer network

We're being reminded to keep wet wipes and kitchen grease out of the waste water network as part of Guernsey Water's Unblocktober campaign.

It aims to raise awareness of the damage that's caused by items that shouldn't be there - such as cooking fat and plastics that are flushed down the loo or put down the sink.

Guernsey Water deals with around 140 pump blockages a year and cleans more than 35km of sewers to keep pipes clear.

To combat problems, it's running a campaign known as Unblocktober, encouraging us to flush away only the three Ps - pee, poo and paper.

Shaun Connelly from Guernsey Water tells Island FM some of the items they've discovered blocking the pipes

"We've found spoons, knives forks, sheets, nappies, children's toys, toothbrushes, all sorts of stuff, lots of debris," he says.

Operations manager Jon Holt explains how we can help:

"Islanders can help us massively by only flushing the three Ps. The things that cause us most problems are fats and greases and wet wipes, which mean we have to clean the sewers far more frequently than we would without those things."
