Tributes are being paid to the chairman of Island FM, John Burley, who has died at the age of 78.

John Burley became chairman of the applicant group for the first commercial radio station in Guernsey, Island FM, which launched in October 1992.

He served as its chairman for 31 years, seeing the station grow to become one of the most successful in the British Isles.

He was a regular visitor to Island FM until very recently, and always took an active interest in its output and its staff.

"The Taverners in Guernsey are very sad to hear of John's passing. He was a tremendous character. It wasn't just his attire that was bright, it was him as well."

"She would come down and go to the paddock, even if she didn't have a runner.

"Her knowledge of racehorses was quite remarkable."

Toni Clayton says John Burley will be remembered by the Lord's Taverners nationally, at their annual Christmas fundraising lunch in London, on 4 December:

"I'm sure there will be a tribute and a minute's silence for John at the lunch.

"He was very well respected within the region."

Island FM Managing Director James Keen said, "John was a passionate advocate for Island FM and his connections within Guernsey unmatched.

"His contribution to the radio station over the last thirty years has been substantial and he will be missed by the entire team."

Everyone at Island FM and the wider Tindle Media Group extends their heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

Memorial services celebrating his life will be held in Guernsey and London next year.
