Future Lt. Governors To Pay Income Tax?

Deputies amend the 2024 budget to try to put the tax position of the King's representative on a par with Britain's royalty.

The Royal Family began paying income tax voluntarily 30 years ago, but in Guernsey their representative enjoys a tax-free salary in excess of £100k per annum.

Deputies Gavin St Pier and Andy Taylor believe the logic and principle of this is unsustainable and want the other Crown Dependencies and government in Whitehall to review the matter.

If eventually agreed, it would mean repealing a 1972 law and it would come into effect on the appointment of the next lieutenant governor.

Both deputies say the salary has to attract the right calibre of candidate so it's uncertain what level of tax it could return to the States.

Deputies debate the 2024 budget on Tuesday 7 November.
