Free Disposal Of Weed Killers Before Ban

Guernsey Waste is offering islanders a safe way to dispose of glyphosate products ahead of a ban on their use.

Guernsey households will be able to drop off weed killers and pesticides containing the soon-to-be restricted chemical glyphosate to Household Waste & Recycling Centre, free of charge.

The ban on non-professional use of glyphosate products will come into force at the end of the year.

This comes after concerns that the chemical, which is in a variety of well-known brands such as Roundup, could impact water supplies.

Guernsey Waste says it is pleased to offer the island a proper disposal method but urges islanders not to make a special trip to the centre on Bulwer Avenue.

Instead, we’re being asked to take weed killers and pesticides containing glyphosate along when we have other items to recycle or dispose of between now and the end of December.

Guernsey Waste Operations Manager, Sarah Robinson says the solution being offered only works if islanders use it responsibly:

“The good news is that we will accept weed killers and pesticides at the Household Waste & Recycling Centre, free of charge. They can then be disposed of appropriately.

However, we have limited storage capacity, so we want to avoid being inundated suddenly. For that reason, we would ask islanders not to make a special trip to drop off these products. We would much rather they bring them along when they are dropping off other waste or recycling between now and the end of the year."

Opening hours of the Household Waste & Recycling Centre can be found at gov.gg/hwrc.

Anyone with a large quantity of glyphosate products or chemicals in an unlabelled container should contact the Hazardous Waste Technical Officer at [email protected] or on 01481 226263 to arrange collection.
