Downpours caused flooding across Guernsey

Heavy rain throughout Wednesday (29 January) led to widespread flash flooding across Guernsey.

Hours of persistent downpours made a number of routes across the island impassable.

Several roads were closed and others were partially blocked by standing water.

Areas affected included Baissieres, Ramee and Coutanchez.

Guernsey Fire and Rescue answered multiple requests for help, including moving cars that had got stuck in flood water.

The service advised motorists not to drive through it, warning of the potential for it to be contaminated with sewage.

Police say they were inundated with calls.

Just under 30mm of rain fell across the day, which is around a third of the total expected for the month of January.

Guernsey Water, States Works and Traffic & Highway Services were also responding to urgent calls across the day, and clearing affected routes.
