Cycling Family Gets First Yellow Guernsey Awards

Allister Carey and his grandson Max (14) have been awarded the first Yellow Guernseys for being 'active travel role models'.

The pair have been presented with the first ever  'Yellow Guernsey Awards' as part of a new campaign by the  Health Improvement Commission.

It is inspired by a similar initiative by Cycling UK,  where yellow jumpers are given to people who champion cycling in their communities.

Allister Carey established The Eleanor Foundation 10 years ago.

The charity sends old bikes from Guernsey to rural African communities.

In the past decade, nearly 4,000 bikes have been repurposed, providing vital transport.

Mr Carey  - who is often seen cycling around the lanes of St Martins - is pleased to have received the award.

"I think it's a great initiative, it just to gives cycling a little bit more of a push, and I was really delighted and surprised to get it!

Active Travel Officer, Alex Costen presented the jumpers to Allister Carey and his grandson, Max.

He explains why cycling is his and his family's preferred mode of transport:

"I enjoy the freedom of cycling.

I use it to go from point A to B - to go shopping, run errands, and so on.

It makes life so much easier, I find I can get from where I live in Saint Martins into St Peter Port and out to the west coast of the island in a short space of time.

I never have to worry about where I'm going to park a vehicle either."

Grandson Max has overcome his fears to get on his bike, learning to ride earlier this year.

He had not wanted to cycle because his auntie Ellie (Allister's daughter) died in a bicycle crash in London 10 years ago.

But this summer, he had a go on his brother's bike, and has not looked back.

"I have 3 or 4 friends at school and we meet together and cycle to school. It means we can chat on the way there and I enjoy it. I also meet up with friends in our spare time and it gives us the chance to socialise anywhere we can cycle to on the island."

Islanders can contact the Health Improvement Commission to nominate someone deserving of the Yellow Guernsey Award.
