Channel Islands mark Remembrance Sunday

People across the Channel Islands will honour armed forces members who have died for our freedom during times of conflict.

The Channel Islands will fall silent on Remembrance Sunday (10 November) and a number of services will take place to remember the men and women who lost their lives in wars.

In Guernsey...

Retired soldiers, cadet forces, and standards from local organisations will march at 10.35am from the Town Fire Station to the War Memorial on Smith Street.

A bugler will sound the Last Post at 10.58am, followed by two minutes of silence.

Then there will then be a short service and wreath laying.

In Jersey...

At 10.30am ex-service associations will gather in union Street opposite the Government building, and the Band of the Island of Jersey will form up by People’s Park ready to lead the Cadet units to The Parade.

They will march to the front of the Cenotaph just before 11am, when the Parade Commander will those assembled to attention.

The Act of Remembrance and two minutes silence will then commence.

The saluting gun will mark the end of silence at 11.02am.

A wreath-laying will then be followed by The Remembrance Service, Royal Salute and National Anthem.

Surrounding roads are expecting to be closed to public vehicles from 9.30am till 12.30pm.

Two Chelsea Pensioners will join a luncheon at Government House at 12:45pm - along with Ernest Thorne, the only surviving Normandy veteran.

Jersey's Lieutenant Governor Vice Admiral Jerry Kyd refers to current conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East in his 2024 Poppy Appeal message.

He says islanders should not take peace for granted.

"The annual Remembrance ceremony and Poppy Appeal is a chance to take a moment and pay our respects to those who died for us in wars against the forces of tyranny and evil.

"We all, perhaps, forget how lucky we are to live in Jersey. No rocket attacks or aerial bombardments in St Helier. Plentiful food, clean water, electricity, modern health care and social tolerance.

"And of course, our freedom and security that has been hard won through the blood, sweat and tears of so many brave and selfless service personnel, many of whom never came home to enjoy the bounty of peace."
